How to choose fabric

May 30, 2024

Nowadays, upholstery mostly uses fabrics and knits made of artificial fibers, mainly polyester, nylon, acrylic and vinyl. Structured fabrics, microfiber, chenille and velvet are considered very durable and work particularly well in a family living room. One of the most durable materials is natural leather, but it is both luxurious and expensive. A very good vegan solution can be imitation leather - almost as durable and timeless, and beautiful.

For dark clothing, you should make sure that the fabric is not exposed to direct sunlight, as dark clothing fades easily. If not, and you plan to place it in a sunny room, choose a light-colored or fade-resistant fabric.

If you like very bright colors, but they are more likely to show dirt, you have three options: choose a removable, washable cover or stain-resistant fabric, or be prepared to have your upholstery cleaned frequently by a professional.

It is worth mentioning that almost all modern upholstery fabrics are composite materials, that is, they consist of at least two layers: the actual top fabric and a bottom fabric, which stabilizes the whole. As a result, the fabric does not stretch, it does not break, and there is no thread shifting at the seams.

Structured fabrics
A very large and interesting group of materials with eye-catching surfaces. These are the most durable fabrics for sofas. Their characteristics are their unusual texture and weave, and their quality. Their selection is really wide!

Velvet
If the fabric is tight and made of polyester, it will withstand daily wear and tear while being soft to the touch. That's why so many people love it. Most stains are easily removed with a sponge, soap and water.

Chenille
It is thicker than velvet, so it is more durable, and if you find a stain-resistant version, you can be sure that this fabric will last a long time. The downside of chenille is that it is easily damaged by sharp objects (such as claws) as well as excessive sunlight.

Corduroy
Corduroy is a fairly thick and durable material that is very resistant to pulling. It may wear a little, but regular combing with a soft brush will help restore it to its original shape. Just as importantly, corduroy is easy to clean and care for.

Microfiber
Microfiber is inexpensive, but it is highly stain-resistant and easy to clean, making it an excellent choice. Its downside is that it easily attracts hair and dust, but a tumbler clothes tumbler can help us remove them.

Natural leather
Durable and resistant to spills and stains, it becomes softer and develops a patina over time. The downside is that it is expensive. Animal rights activists cannot accept this material.

Eco-leather
Easy to keep clean, not susceptible to stains and scratches. Not as durable as genuine leather and tends to crack over time.
